Age of Empires

The scope of Microsoft's Age of Empires runs the gamut from meager tribes to control of vast empires by beginning in the Stone Age, when mankind takes its first steps toward becoming the dominant species on the face of the Earth, until global warming ends the Ice Age, and hunters and gatherers slowly give way to the beginnings of the great civilizations.
There are four major ways to achieve victory in the random map or deathmatch modes of Age of Empires, and all are contingent on being the first player in the game to reach specific milestones. Control of all artifacts or ruins for 2,000 years earns victory, as does building the first Wonder of the World to stand for 2,000 years. Another means to victory lies in conquest of the other players -- total destruction of enemy villagers, military units, war ships, and buildings. A final option allows for setting a time limit, with the team or player with the highest score at game's end declared the winner.
In single-player action, campaigns made up of linked scenarios allow you to select one of 12 civilizations to lead to glory by outscoring all other civilizations (players) in the game. For single and multiplayer participants, more than 40 preset stand-alone scenarios are available, as well as the option to generate random scenarios. Up to eight players can go head-to-head or join cooperative matches via a LAN or the Internet.
This turn-based strategy game, Age of Empires, lets you build your civilization and mold it as you see fit through the use of military might, expansion, diplomacy, economic dominance or technological advance. Civilizations include Assyrian, Babylonian, Ancient Choson, Egyptian, Greek, Hittite, Minoan, Persian, Phoenician, Shang, Sumerian and Yamato, each with unique qualities, attributes, weaponry, and special characteristics.
Age of Empires employs a large variety of game customization options including map size and type, victory conditions, starting age (Stone, Tool, Bronze or Iron), difficulty level, quantity of resources (wood, food, stone, gold), whether to enable cheating or not, fixed starting positions, and terrain visibility. The game supports a point-and-click interface with hotkey commands available in most situations.
Gameplay features empire building from the ground up: gathering resources, creating villagers, military units and boats, constructing buildings and repair facilities, trading, researching technology, advancing through the four specific ages and upgrading units and structures. The mastery of combat and diplomacy, healing, and conversion of enemy units plays a part in the success or failure of your fledgling civilization.
A scenario builder is included in the game to allow for customization of maps, terrain, players, units, diplomacy, global and individual victory conditions, options, messages, and cinematics. The game's manual provides historical perspectives on each of the 12 civilizations and covers information such as location, capital, rise to power, economy, religion, culture, government, architecture, military, decline and fall, and legacy. A glossy foldout contains quick reference to the tech tree, hotkeys, unit and civilization attributes, and the scoring system.

Age of Empires 2 The Age of Kings

As in the original Age of Empires, released in 1997, the ultimate goal in Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is to develop a civilization from its humble beginnings to the glory years of a vast, world dominating empire. This goal can be achieved by various means including domination by military might, economic superiority, technological advances through four distinct eras, or diplomacy and trade.
You begin your empire-building task in this real-time strategy game as a small tribe on an unexplored map. By discovering resources and putting your clan to work harvesting them, your empire steadily develops. As time passes and your civilization grows, you'll expand your realm through population increases, exploitation of more resources (food, wood, stone, and gold) and specific work assignments to your villagers such as hunting, fishing, foraging, farming, lumberjacking, and mining.
As your resources, land acquisition, and knowledge grow, you'll inevitably meet other tribes or civilizations. Some will be reasonable and willing to exchange ideas and resources, while others will be determined to subjugate your realm through force. To meet these latter contingencies, you'll need to develop a military and equip it with the latest weapons technology can forge. If you seek a peaceful solution to world domination, you'll need to concentrate on building and construction as a means to develop new technologies and advance commodity trading via trade routes and alliances.
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings contains a vast number of enhancements and improvements over the original game. Just some of the new features include a choice of technology paths (over 100 nodes), building and defending Wonders of the World, and crafting military might through not only ground-based troops but naval and siege warfare as well. You can choose to play against human- or computer-controlled opponents, the latter being especially formidable due to aggressive AI programming.
The heart of the game revolves around a random map generator for both single and multiplayer modes. With no two games ever being alike, this feature allows for unlimited replay. For those wishing to immerse themselves in historical campaigns, the designers have included four fully developed campaigns based on the struggles of Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan, Frederick Barbarossa and Saladin, each consisting of a series of linear scenarios.
There are 13 playable civilizations from which to choose: Britons, Byzantines, Celts, Chinese, Franks, Goths, Japanese, Mongols, Persians, Saracens, Teutons, Turks, and Vikings. All have characteristics and attributes based on their real world existence and philosophical outlooks, proprietary weaponry and armor indigenous to their historical eras, and special bonuses based on inherent strengths.
Other enhancements to the original game include eight new map types that can be manually selected or randomly chosen by the computer, many new units ranging from demolition ships to heroes, new buildings and technologies, military formations and stances, and gathering points for newly created units. Additionally, the act of garrisoning specific buildings or locations is now available, as are new in-game accesses to an encyclopedia containing historical notes on the various civilizations and the expanded technology tree.
Nearly every setup in the game is customizable for both single and multiplayer games. Winning the game hinges on achieving various victory conditions built into each scenario. The game includes not only an option to design your own scenarios and campaigns through use of both campaign and map editors, but offers a chance to develop player scripts as well.
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings spans history from the days of the great Roman Empire to medieval times. From multiplayer game options such as Deathmatch and Regicide (players must protect their king or queen while attempting to assassinate the enemy leader) to single-player campaigns and scenarios, Age of Empires II offers the real-time strategy gamer a huge array of possibilities and deep gameplay. Multiplayer Internet action is offered free at the MSN Gaming Zone, over a LAN, or through a direct modem-to-modem connection.

Age of Empires 3

Following a well-received break to the realms of ancient mythology, Ensemble Studios returns its real-time strategy sensibilities to the real world with this third edition of the historically themed Age of Empires series. After conquering the Continent in earlier editions and expansion packs, the series stakes claim to the New World in Age of Empires III. Players choose to guide one of eight Old World powers, and manage their empire from a European home city, but all of the base-building, battle, and conquest take place across the sprawling untamed wilderness of the Americas. Each home county is offers different advantages, such as Britain's economic strength, France's propensity for allegiance with Native American civilizations, or Spain's formidable colonial presence.

Although Age of Empires III offers the sophisticated style of real-time strategy established earlier in the franchise, some aspects have been streamlined and others deepened. While settlers are still required to collect resources, they no long need to carry them back to a drop-off point. Players still race to advance from one technological "Age" to the next, but with each jump they may gain new political or diplomatic abilities, as well as technological proficiencies. Victory on the battlefield still relies on balanced forces and good tactics, but it now also rewards the player's home city with influential experience that adds to the empire's overall power.
