A stylish take on classic side-scrolling beat 'em ups, Castle Crashers lets up to four players hack and slash their way through enemy-filled kingdoms on a quest to collect gold, find treasure, and rescue princesses. Castle Crashers features the same sort of graphics employed in the developer's previous game, Alien Hominid, and the combat resembles that of classic brawlers such as Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Double Dragon. But the game also makes use of RPG-style elements that let players improve their character's skills in strength, magic, defense, and agility.
There are more than 20 characters from which to choose, and each character can unlock up to 40 unique weapons. In addition, gamers can select animal orb sidekicks that offer characters special attribute boosts, and there are stores located throughout the game where players can buy and sell weapons, or purchase new characters and items. And if gamers get tired of teamwork, they have four unique ways to fight amongst one another in the Arena mode.
