Winner of Microsoft's 2009 "Dream.Build.Play" competition for indie developers, and crafted almost single-handedly by animator Dean Dodrill, Dust: An Elysian Tail combines the classic side-scrolling action and exploration of Metroid and Castlevania with combo-heavy combat and RPG leveling. Players join the amnesiac Dust, his talking sword Ahrah, and his flying fox sidekick Fidget as they hack-and-slash their way through hordes of enemies on a quest to learn about Dust's past, and prevent the evil General Gaius from wiping out the entire Moonblood race. In addition to Dust's sword-swinging exploits, gamers can take advantage of his "Dust Storm" ability to produce tornado-like winds, or make use of Fidget's three kinds of projectiles, and combining the two abilities produces a screen-filling, "bullethell"-like fusillade. Players also rack up XP as they battle, allowing them to upgrade five different pieces of equipment or craft their own items. The main storyline is designed to take roughly 12 hours to complete, but hidden chests, side quests, and four difficulty levels are included to offer extra gameplay.
